£600m given to allies in Europe. Paid for 450,000 Russian and Austrian troops by 1813. Small numbers of troops fought against Napoleon but used wealth of trade against him.

Diplomatic Efforts
British Prime Minister organised Third Coalition when the truce of 1802-03 broke down. Persuaded Austrian to oppose Napoleon in 1809. Kept Russia, Prussia and Austria together in final struggle in 1812.

Naval Blockade
Constant pressure against French trade and imports of war supplies from neutral countries through naval blockade. Orders in Council gave legal right for Britain to seize cargo headed to France. Attack on Copenhagen in 1807 as they protested.

Important naval victories, e.g Battle of Trafalgar in Oct 1805. French and Spanish fleet attacked and seriously weakened, preventing invasion of Britain. Domination protected Channel and caused damage to French trade/colonies.

Importance of Peninsular War. Established in Iberian Peninsula under Wellesley after failure in Spain. Drained French forces - pinned down 300,000 troops. Britain invaded France in 1814 - Napoleon blamed 'Spanish Ulcer' for downfall.

Battle of Waterloo - 18th June 1814
Napoleon briefly returned to power in Hundred Days and invaded Belgium. Anglo-Dutch army blocked way to Brussels. British defended Waterloo against French and Prussians. Napoleon imprisoned on St Helena - died in 1821.

Britain depended on industrial growth of its economy and naval power. Support network of soldiers, craftsmen, farmers, merchant seamen.

Importance
60,000 troops relatively insignificant. Napoleon's lack of compromise after defeat in 1812 played into hands of British. Continental System one of reasons why France fought Russia. Naval power prevented invasion but couldn't defeat France alone.
