what were the main factors weakening the conservative?

education act- medical inspection. 3/4 used it 2/3 some form of medical treatment but only a small check up and not always treatment many poor people couldnt afford the treatment if their child had a problem

old age pensions people over 70 5s (single person) 7s 6D for couple. non contributory people werent too ashamed to get it but only to elderly poor on a very low incone had a be a good character (worked regularly not been in prison)

trade boards minumum wage/ conditions only covered the sweated trades not rigorous and labour exchanges 2m workers registered by 1914 only helped market more smoothly

the national insurance acts (sickness and unemployed) unemployment: covered 2.25m 7s for 15 weeks only applied to certain trades. sickness 13m covered for 6 months only 16-60

workmens compensation (1906) not always easy to prove injuries, merchant shipping improved food and accommodation, shops act and coal mines act 1908/11 8 hour days improved safety

housing it was still in short supply, the poor law untouched, education children left at 13, areas in poverty large families

275 to the liberals and 273 to cons libs relied on Ireland therefore majority sided with the budget and it was passed

house of lords could not amend/reject money bills, could not delay a bill for more than 2 years and general elections would be held every 5 years instead of 7 years

what was Asquith's solution to try and pass the parliament bill but what happened?
to ask the king (edward VII) who had the power to create peers and therefore make enough liberal peers to outvote cons but edward died in suddenly the new king George wanted them to agree a solution but instead settled for another election

libs and cons got 272 seats each but libs gained the majority from lab and irish nationalists

enough rats liberal/cons outvoted the diehards to 131 votes to 114 therefore no extra liberals had to be added and it was now law

to give Ireland there own parliament to give them power to make laws on Irish matters but British parliament would control foreign policy, defence, trade, pensions and national insurance

ulster unionists because they were against home rule together ulster were mainly protestant and were threatened by the heavy catholic dominated country
