Interregnum
The time in which a throne is vacant between two successive reigns,i.e.from Charles I's execution in 1649 to Charles II's restoration in 1660.

Council of State
A government council that considers high-level policy, similar to the Privy Council.

Commonwealth
The official name given to the government of England from the abolition of the monarchy in 1649 to the establishment of the Protectorate in 1653.

Instrument of Government
The constitutional document that established the Protectorate. It contained 42 articles and vested executive authority in Cromwell and a Council of State of 21 members. It was replaced by the Humble Petition and Advice in May 1657.
