Brain structure and function

?
Cerebrum
Controls voluntary actions (e.g learning, memory, personality) and conscious thought. Split into L + R hemispheres, connected by neurones - corpus callosum - each hemisphere controls half of the body
1 of 6
Cerebral cortex
Subdivided into areas responsible for diff. things. E.g sensory cortex receives info directly from sensory receptors. Motor cortex sends impulses to the effectors
2 of 6
Cerebellum
Controls unconscious functions e.g posture. Responsible for balance and fine movement. Receives info from retina, inner ear, spindle fibres in muscle to co-ordinate control. Co-ordinates learnt activities (automatic) e.g riding a bike
3 of 6
Medulla oblongata
Autonomic control (e.g breathing / heart rate)
4 of 6
Hypothalamus
Main controlling region for the autonomic nervous system. Two centres, one for parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. Controls complex patterns of behaviour (e.g feeding, sleeping) monitoring blood plasma conc. and producing hormones
5 of 6
Pituitary gland
Found at base of hypothalamus. Controls most of the body glands. Anterior pituitary produces six hormones (incl. FSH) and posterior pituitary stores/releases hormones produced by hypothalamus (e.g ADH)
