When someone is treated unfairly because of their age.

Treating people unequally on the grounds of their membership to a certain group.

Inequality
The boundaries in society that prevent people from attaining equal status.

Life Chances
The opportunities people have in society to get the things they want.

Moral Panic
The media exaggerating the social problems caused by certain groups and creating public alarm about them.

Predjudice
Learned beliefs and values that lead an individual to be biased against certain groups.

Racism
Prejudice or discrimination based on ethnicity.

Sexism
Prejudice or discrimination based on gender.

Social Class
The way the British society is divided into groups on the basis of differences in income, wealth and power.

Exploitation
When one group or individual treats another group or individual unfairly for their own advantage.

Social Exclusion
When people are unable, or feel unable to play a full part in society. This may be due to the lack of material resources, discrimination by others or a sense that the rest of society neither wants or respects them.

Marginalisation
Where people feel pushed to the edges of society, usually as a result of social exclusion.

Stereotype
Oversimplified or untrue generalisations made about social groups.

Power
The ability of people to influence others and to get their own way.

Prestige
The level of respect others are given.

Open Society
In this type of society it is possible to be socially mobile.

Status
Can refer to a position in society and the degree of honour or prestige which is attached to social groups or occupations in society.

Ascribed Status
A status which is given at birth e.g gender.

Achieved Status
A status which you have gained or worked for e.g to train as a doctor.

Meritocracy
Everybody has equal opportunities to succeed.

Privilege
A special or fortunate entitlement. It can be ascribed as you can be born into a privileged lifestyle.

Life Style
The way in which a person leads their life.

Authority
The right (power) to give orders and make decisions.

Elite
The most powerful, rich, gifted and educated members of society.

Income
The flow of resources that an individual receives e.g wages, benefits, pensions.

Wealth
The ownership of assets e.g land, houses which can be sold to make money.
