Bonding and Structure - Key Questions AQA Chem AS

Hey guys

Test yourself with these bonding and structure questions from unit 1 AQA Chemistry

I will be making more of these for each of the other topics of unit 1- please go check them out if this one was of use to you

:)

?
What is ionic bonding?
Electrostatic force of attraction between positively and negatively charged ions in a lattice
1 of 19
How is a covalent bond formed?
Two adjacent nuclei attract for a shared electron pair
2 of 19
How does a coordinate dative bond form?
The lone pair of electrons on one atom is donated to another atom
3 of 19
What is metallic bonding?
Attraction of a lattice of positive ions to the sea of delocalised electrons
4 of 19
True or False, The higher the charge on the positive ion and the smaller the ion the stronger the metallic bonding?
True! For example the metallic bonding in aluminium is stronger than in sodium because Al has a 3+ charge and Na only has a 1+ charge
5 of 19
Define electronegativity
The power of an atom to withdraw electron density from a covalent bond
6 of 19
What is the trend in electronegativity across a period?
Electronegativity increases because there is increased nuclear attraction because of more protons, for a bonding pair. Electrons are in the same energy level so shielding and distance from nucleus is similar
7 of 19
What is the trend in electronegativity down a group?
Decreases because of increased atomic radius and therefore more shielding from attraction of nucleus to the bonding pair
8 of 19
What are the three types of intermolecular force?
Van Der Waals forces, Dipole-Dipole and Hydrogen bonding
9 of 19
Why are there Van Der Waals forces in every molecule?
This is due to temporary dipoles
10 of 19
What three elements can hydrogen bonding form between?
F, N and O
11 of 19
What type of crystal structure makes up diamond?
Macromolecular
12 of 19
Which crystal structure can conduct electricity?
Metallic because a current is able to pass through the free moving electrons
13 of 19
What crystal type does carbon show?
Macromolecular structure
14 of 19
Which repulsion is greater? Lone pair-Lone pair or Lone pair-Bonding pair?
Lone pair - Lone pair is greater
15 of 19
What is the bond angle in a linear molecule?
180 degrees
16 of 19
If a shape has three bonding pairs and the bond angle was 120 degrees, what would the name of the shape be?
Trigonal Planar
17 of 19
What is the bond angle in a tetrahedral molecule?
109 degrees and 28 degrees
18 of 19
What is the bond angle in a water molecule? And what would be the name of the shape?
The bond angle would be 104.5 degrees and the name of the shape is bent
