What is an ion?How is it formed?
An ion is an electrically charged atom that is formed when it looses or gains an electron.
1 of 14
How do positively charged ions form?
Metal atoms lose the electron, or electrons, in their highest energy level and become positively charged ions.
2 of 14
How do negatively charged ions form?
Non-metal atoms gain an electron, or electrons, from another atom to become negatively charged ions.
3 of 14
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is a strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
4 of 14
Which group in the periodic table forms ionic compounds?
Group 1-the alkali metals
5 of 14
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is the sharing of electrons in non-metal atoms.
6 of 14
What are the properties of a covalent bond?
They are strong therefore alot of energy is needed to break them.
7 of 14
How many electrons are involved in each covalent bond?
Two electrons(a pair).
8 of 14
How can you tell how many electrons will be shared?
8 minus the group number.
9 of 14
Which elements normally form 4 covalent bonds?
Carbon.
10 of 14
What do metals consist of?
Metals consist of giant structures of atoms arranged in a regual pattern.
11 of 14
What are the electrons in the highest energy level of metals allowed to do?
They are free to move, also known as delocalised electrons.
12 of 14
What structure do macromolecules have?
Macromolecules have a giant covalent structure.
13 of 14
What are 2 examples of macromolecules?
Diamond and silica.
