What 4 main things does the blood consist of?
Plasma,Platelets,Red Blood cells & White blood cells
1 of 9
What is plasma?
the pale yellow liquid part of the blood (blood - blood cells = plasma)
2 of 9
What does the plasma carry?
Red & white blood cells, platelets, water, digested food products from gut to cells e.g.glucose & amino acids, CO2 from cells to lungs,Urea from liver to kidneys,Hormones (chemical messengers) and Antibodies-proteins involved in body's immune response
3 of 9
What is the function of red blood cells?
to carry oxygen around the body
4 of 9
How does their shape and size enable them to be effective at their job?
Red blood cells are small and have a biconcave disc shape (looks like its been pressed in the middle)- gives a large surface area:volume ratio for absorbing/releasing oxygen
5 of 9
Explain how a particular substance inside red blood cells enables them to do their job?
Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which gives blood its colour as it contains lots of iron.In the lungs, haemoglobin combines with oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin, then this process reverses to release oxygen to the cells
6 of 9
Why don't red blood cells have a nucleus?
Red Blood cells don't have a nucleus so there's more space for haemoglobin, so the red blood cell can carry more oxygen
7 of 9
Why are red blood cells small & very flexible?
Red Blood cells are small & very flexible so they can easily pass through the tiny capillaries
8 of 9
What do Platelets do?
Platelets are fragments of cells & help the blood clot e.g. when you have a cut
