The only visitors were wealthy people who wanted to ride horses on the beach. People were attracted to the Irish Sea. First Guesthouse opened by Edward Whiteside.

Stage coaches brought tourists from Manchester on a new private road. Holiday cottages were built by local man Henry Banks. A rail link was added allowing more tourists to visit.

Central Pier opened with open-air dancing for everyone. A new promenade was opened to the south which linked the different areas of Blackpool together.

Consolidation - 1912
Huge developments in the town. Blackpool tower was built. 850,000 visitors per year in the town. The Empress Ballrooms were built and a big wheel with 30 carriages was erected. Railway station was rebuilt.

Stagnation - 1986
The Sandcastle (an indoor swimming pool) and Blackpool Zoo was opened. But visitor numbers were starting to decline.

Decline - 1987
Annual day visits declined from 7.4 million to 3.9 million. £300 million drop in money being spent by tourists. Only half the number of day trippers (3.9 million per year).

Rejuvenation - 2003+
26,000 jobs created. £2.2 billion investment. The old Bond Street Hotel was demolished and rebuilt with 142 bedrooms. New coastal defences were completed at a cost of £80 million.
