In Victorian times, seaside holidays became fashionable for the wealthy. In mid-19th century, railway linked Blackpool to Manchester. Factory workers poured into Blackpool on Bank Holidays. Annual paid holidays- people spent a week each year there.

In the 1960s it stagnated, but it really began to decline in the 1990s.

Why did tourism decline?
>Overseas competition - more reliable weather, cheap flights, package holidays >Parts of Blackpool became 'run-down'. This turned it into a destination for stag and hen parties, putting off many family visitors.

What were some of the consequences of tourism decline?
>1000 hotels closed and low occupancy meant that there was a lack of money to spend on improvements >Between 1990-1999 visitor numbers dropped from 17 million to 11 million >Seasonal unemployment and low wages
