In the 1870's, due to the development of the railways making the area more accessible. Also many couldn't afford flights abroad as they were only affordable for the rich, so it was a popular destination for families.

It began in the 1990's due to the introduction of package holidays and budget airlines. Also the popularity of the Mediterranean increased since there was guaranteed weather. Furthermore people had more disposable income and leisure time.

What did Blackpool do as part of the rejuvenation project?
26,700 new jobs were created. A new shopping centre was built. Blackpool illuminations run in the autumn to prolong the tourism season. There was a big effort to clean up the beaches, which was a success as three beaches now have blue flag status.
