Frederick Douglass
1865-95. Opponent of slavery, supporter of all civil rights (not just Blacks), raised awareness (newspapers and speeches).

1865. Comprised of freedmen who joined their earnings to buy land to provide schools and teachers.

Booker T. Washington
1881-1915. Ran the Tuskegee Institute, gave the Atlanta speech, accommodationist, organised the ***** Business League.

1883-1928. Editor of newspapers that were protesting against the treatment of Blacks, supporter of Garvey, President of the Afro-American Council.

1884-1931. Sued the railroad company, public opposition to lynching, women's rights.

W.E.B. Du Bois
1903-1963. Found the Niagara movement (1905), founded the NAACP.

NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People)
1909-present. Both Black & White supporters, peaceful, focus on legal aspects, Constitutional organisation, significant long-term role.

Marcus Garvey
1917-1925. Founded UNIA (1917), Blacks taking control of their own affairs, Black Eagle Star Steamship, open air parades, military style leadership.

Universal ***** Improvement Association (UNIA)
1917-1927. Campaigned for equal rights and independence of Blacks rather than absorbing into the melting pot, encouraged to develop their own institutions etc.

Thurgood Marshall.
1940-1993. Black lawyer winning nearly all the NAACP cases and was the first Black Justice of the Supreme Court.

Martin Luther King Jr. (and Southern Christian Leadership Conference/SCLC)
1954-1968. Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955), Birmingham Protest (1963), "I have a Dream" Speech (1963), sit-ins, freedom rides, peaceful, desegregation & political rights, views later changed.

Malcolm X
1960-65. Member of the Nation of Islam, violent, economic and social rights, wrote in a journal, gave speeches, Black superiority, views changed later.

Black Panthers
1966-1976. Economic emphasis, influenced by Black Power and Malcolm X, had a 10-point programme, violent, military style.

Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE)
1942-1968. Organised sit-ins in Chicago restaurants, demanded desegregation on interstate transport, agreed to work with other organisations on voter registration in Mississippi, involved in March on Washington (1963).

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe (SNCC)
Founded in 1960. Major involvements in sit-ins, Albany (1961-2), Freedom Summer (1964) and Meredith March (1966), also involved in Freedom Rides (1961) and March on Washington. Radicalised during Meredith March by Stokely Carmichael.
