Cause/Reason
Genetic predisposition as it tends to run in families. Triggered by abuse/bereavement. Exact cause not known. Biological disorder - lack of serotonin.

Physical impact - Patient
Periods of depression, periods of mania, change in appetite, change in sleeping pattern, racing speech, loss of energy, lethargic, comfort eat, aches, pains and increased blood pressure.

Intellectual impact - Patient
Lack of concentration, problems with memory, don't make rational decisions/think straight.

Emotional impact - Patient
Mania = hallucinations, optimistic, heightened mood, confidence, anxiety and paranoia. Depression= prolonged sadness, helpless, hopeless, worthless, guilty, pessimistic, don't enjoy hobbies.

Relationships with family/friends are effected, mania = struggle to make friends, depression = withdraw and children are neglected.

Time off work, work part-time, sole provider, debt.
