Define the term biotechnology
It is the use of biological processes, especially with microorganisms for the production of useful products that benefit man
1 of 8
What are microorganisms usually grown in for biotechnology are what sytems are used?
Microoragnisms are usualy grown in huge fermenters where either batch cultures or continuous systems are used.
2 of 8
What is essential to the survival of the microorganisms in a fermenter?
The conrtrol of certain conditions including temperature, pH and oxygenation in order to get a high quality product.
3 of 8
Different microbes produce different products at different points of their growth, what two main type of things produced which is critical for scientists to investigate / know?
There are primary and secondary metabolites made at different points of a microorganisms life cycle
4 of 8
When are the majority of products needed produced? and what condition are the cells in?
They are secondary metabolites and made during the stationary phase of growth where the cells are under stress.
5 of 8
When are antibiotics produced and what bacteria are they from?
Most antibiotics are from Streptomyces bacteria where their growth is manipulated so the cells are purposely put under stress during the stationary phase
6 of 8
What other useful products are made from microbes?
Amino acids, organic acids biopolymers and biofuel, more commonly is cheese, bread and alcohols
7 of 8
What further research is being done for use of microorganisms in the future and how?
Microbial fuel cells could be developed to produce electricity by microbes breaing down substrates which can be manipulated to generate energy and electricity
