what are the 2 parts of the nervous system?
central nervous system (CNS)
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
1 of 29
what makes up the central nervous system and what's it responsible for?
brain and spinal cord
complex commands and decisions
2 of 29
what does the peripheral nervous system do?
transmitting messages to and from the CNS through neurons
3 of 29
what does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) do?
- transmits information too and from internal organs.
- its autonomic because the system acts involuntarily
4 of 29
what does the somatic nervous system (SNS) do?
'sends' and 'recieves' information from receptor cells in the sense organs to the CNS
5 of 29
what does the endocrine system do?
instructs glands to release hormones into the blood stream
6 of 29
what are hormones?
chemical substances that circulate the body in the bloodstream and only effect target organs
7 of 29
an example of a hormone
Thyroxine
produced by the thyroid gland, has various effects, including increasing heart rate and raising metabolic rate
8 of 29
what's the main gland in the endocrine system and what does it do?
The pituitary gland
it controls the release of hormones from other glands in the body.
9 of 29
when would be a time for the ANS and endocrine system to work together
a stressful event
10 of 29
what happens during a stressful event
1) stressor is percieved
2) hypothalamus (in the brain) activates pituitary gland
3) this triggers activity in sympathetic branch of the ANS
4) stress hormone is released
11 of 29
what is the stress hormone and where is it released?
adrenaline
adrenal gland
12 of 29
what does adrenaline do?
causes physiological changes to the body that prepare the body for fight or flight
13 of 29
what is the arousal from adrenaline also known as?
sympathetic state
14 of 29
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
works in opposition to the parasympathetic nervous system to return the body to resting state
15 of 29
describe 4 features of the sympathetic state
1) increased heart rate
2) dilated pupils
3) inhibits saliva production
4) increased breathing rate
16 of 29
describe 4 features of the parasympathetic state
1) decreased heart rate
2) constricts pupils
3) stimulates saliva production
4) decreases breathing rate
17 of 29
what is the function of a motor neuron?
Connects the central nervous system to muscles and glands
18 of 29
what is the function of a sensory neuron?
Carry messages from the PNS to the CNS
19 of 29
what is the function of a relay neuron
Connect sensory neurons to motor and other relay neurons
20 of 29
what do dentrites do?
carry nerve impulses from neighbouring neurons to the cell body
21 of 29
where is the nucleus found in a neuron?
cell body
22 of 29
what does the axon do?
they carry impulses away from the cell body down the length of the neuron
23 of 29
where would you find the myelin sheath and what's its function?
covering the axon
a fatty layer to protect the axon and speed up electrical transmission of the impulse
24 of 29
what stops the myelin sheath having an opposite effect?
nodes of ranvier
these nodes segment the sheath forcing transmissions to 'jump' and so speeding them up
25 of 29
what are found at the end of the axon
terminal buttons
26 of 29
what do terminal buttons do?
communicate with the next neuron across the synapse
27 of 29
what charge do neurons have at resting state
negative charge
28 of 29
how does it then become an action potential?
When activated by a stimulus, the neuron gets a short positive charge that creates an action potential, which then travels down the axon.
