What is the nervous system?
A specialised network of cells in the human body and our primary communication system.
1 of 19
What are the two main fuctions of the nervous system?
1) to collect, process and respond to information in the environment 2) to co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
2 of 19
what are the two sub-systems in the nervous system?
The central nervous system (CNS) + The peripheral nervous system (PNS)
3 of 19
What does the CNS contain?
The brain and the spinal chord
4 of 19
What are the four main areas of the brain
Cerebrum, cerebellum, Diencephalon, brain stem
5 of 19
Name three characteristics of the cerebrum
1) The largest part of the brain 2) Has many areas 3) has many functions
6 of 19
Give an example of what the Cerebrum controls
The frontal lobe is involved in thought and speech production.
7 of 19
What does the Cerebellum control?
1) motor skills and balance 2) co-ordinates muscles
8 of 19
what are the two sub-sections of the Diencephalon?
Thalamus and Hypothalamus
9 of 19
What does the Thalamus do?
It's a relay station for nerve impules from the senses
10 of 19
What does the Hypothalamus do?
It's the link to the endocrine system
11 of 19
What does the Brain Stem do?
regulates automatic function (swallowing)
12 of 19
What is the outer layer of the brain called?
The cerebral cortex
13 of 19
What is the spinal chord responsible for?
an extention of the brain responsible for reflex actions.
14 of 19
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
stransmits messages , via millions of neurons to and from central nervous system.
15 of 19
What is the peripheral nervous system divided into?
Somatic and autonomic
16 of 19
What does the somatic nervous system do?
transmits information from receptor cells in the sensory organ to CNS. It also controls muscle movement.
17 of 19
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Governs vital functions in the body such as breath + heart rate
18 of 19
What are the two main divisions of the Autonomic nervous sytem?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
