What two systems make up the nervous system?
The CNS and the peripheral nervous system
1 of 24
The peripheral nervous system consists of....
1.) somatic nervous system + 2.) autonomic nervous system
2 of 24
What is the somatic system?
Responsible for carrying sensory and motor information to and from the CNS
3 of 24
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Governs vital bodily functions + involuntary
4 of 24
What does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
1.) sympathetic NS + 2.) Parasympathetic branch
5 of 24
What is the effect of the parasympathetic branch?
Heart rate and blood pressure decrease, digestion starts up, mouth can salivate, body is back to an optimum state [rest & digest]
6 of 24
What is the effect of the sympathetic branch?
Heart rate and blood pressure increase, digestion stops, mouth goes dry, body is ready for [fight or flight]
7 of 24
What is the order of the stress response?
1.) threat 2.)[triggers] sympathetic NS 3.)[activates] adrenal medulla 4.)[releases] adrenaline 5.)[causes] (effects of sympathetic branch)
8 of 24
What does the sensory neuron do?
1.) carry nerve impulses from sensory receptors > PNS > CNS > transformed into sensations (pain)
9 of 24
Features of the sensory neuron?
Long dendrites, short axons
10 of 24
What does the relay neuron do?
Connects sensory and motor neurons [most common neuron in the CNS]
11 of 24
Features of the relay neuron?
Short dendrites, short axons
12 of 24
What does the motor neuron do?
Connects CNS to effectors by releasing neurotransmitters [trigger muscle movement]
13 of 24
Features of the motor neuron?
Short dendrites, long axons
14 of 24
o Dendrites
Extend from the cell body. They carry electrical impulses from other neurones towards the cell body
15 of 24
o Axon
Extensions of the neuron, it carries the impulses away from the cell body. It is covered by a sheath of myelin, a fatty substance. (whole tail)
16 of 24
o Myelin Sheath
Fatty tissue that increases the speed of the impulses > nodes of Ranvier are breaks within the myelin sheath
17 of 24
o Axon terminal
End of the axon terminal which communicates with the next neuron
18 of 24
When a neuron is not sending a signal it is...
At rest (resting potential)
19 of 24
When a neurone is activated by a stimulus, the inside of the cell becomes...
positively charged for a short time > the action potential
20 of 24
What does an electrical signal arriving at the end of the end of the axon trigger?
The release of neurotransmitters which are contained in vesicles (sacs)
21 of 24
Order of synaptic transmission:
1.) axon terminal [presynaptic neuron] 2.)NT's released by vesicles 3.) pass through the synaptic cleft 4.) received by the dendrite [Post synaptic receptor]
22 of 24
What is an inhibitory effect?
NT's that act by making the neuron more negatively charged > less likely to fire (e.g. serotonin)
23 of 24
What is an excitatory effect?
• Other neurotransmitters increase the positive charge > make the neuron more likely to fire (e.g. adrenaline)
