Nervous System

?
The Nervous System
Complex network of nerve cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body
1 of 9
The Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and the Spinal cord. Controls the behaviour and the regulation of the body's physiological processes. Brain receives information from sensory receptors and be able to send messages to the muscles and glands of the body
2 of 9
The Brain Areas
Cerebrum, Cerebellum, Diencephalon, Brain Stem
3 of 9
The Spinal Cord
Rely information between the brain and the rest of the body. Connected to different parts of the body by pairs of spinal nerves which connect to specific muscles and glands
4 of 9
The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Consists of the nervous system throughout the rest of the body. Transmits messages via neurons to and from the CNS.
5 of 9
The Somatic Nervous System
Connects the senses and the CNS and control motor movement.Made up of 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Have both sensory and motor neurons. Also involved in reflex actions without the CNS, happens more quickly
6 of 9
The Autonomic Nervous System
Automatic and unconscious. Regulates itself and is responsible for digestion
7 of 9
Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)
Increases activity and is activated when a person is stressed. Bodily responses include heart rate and breathing icreases, digestion stops, salivation reduces, pupils dilate, blood flows at surface of skin
8 of 9
The Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)
Activated when the body is relaxing. Conserving energy and storing resources. Bodily reactions include decreased heart rate and breathing, digesting starts, salivation increases and pupils constrict
