Biomes

?
What is an ecosystem?
grouping of plants and animals that interact with each other and the environment. Self sufficient
1 of 32
What is a biome?
a large ecosystem- a grouping of plants or animals that covers a large area
2 of 32
What is a coniferous biome?
coniferous forests are at a higher latitude where the suns rays are weak. Trees are adapted to the cold with needle like leaves
3 of 32
What is a deciduous biome?
deciduous forests have high rainfall and there are seasonal variations in the suns rays. Trees lose their leaves in the cold winter
4 of 32
What is a tundra biome?
the tundra is within the arctic circle. Receives little heat from the sun and little rainfall. Only tough short grasses survive here
5 of 32
What is a tropical biome?
Tropical rain forests are usually found near the equator. The temperature is hot and there is a lot of heavy rainfall
6 of 32
What is a desert biome?
close to the tropics. This is where hot dry air sinks down onto the earths surface and the suns rays are very concentrated which makes it very hot during the day
7 of 32
What are the different biospheres?
coniferous, deciduous, tundra, tropical and desert
8 of 32
What the tropical rain forest otherwise known as?
the green lungs as it provides 80% of the earths oxygen
9 of 32
How does the biosphere regulate the gases in the atmosphere?
plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen for us to breathe
10 of 32
How does the biosphere regulate the water cycle?
plants slow the flow of water to rivers and filter water to make it clean
11 of 32
How does the biosphere help to keep soil healthy?
new nutrients are provided by rotting plant material which helps new plants to grow
12 of 32
What foods does the biosphere provide for us?
fish, meat, fruits, nuts, berries (specific example- durian fruit tastes like heaven smells like hell)
13 of 32
What medicines does the biosphere provide for us?
Vitamins, plants for making medicines (rosy periwinkle)
14 of 32
What is the rosy periwinkle used for?
It is used in a medicine to help fight blood cancer
15 of 32
What raw materials does the biosphere provide for us?
timber, bamboo, rubber, water, oil and gas store carbon
16 of 32
What does the biosphere provide for us?
foods, medicines and raw materials
17 of 32
What are some direct human impacts on the biosphere?
deforestation, mining, quarrying, farming and over fishing
18 of 32
What causes indirect human impacts on the biosphere?
pollution and climate change
19 of 32
How do pollution and climate change impact the biosphere?
sea temp rise, seawater acidification, melting of polar ice caps, changes in amount of rainfall, stress within ecosystems due to rapid change
20 of 32
Why is the rain forest destroyed for timber?
people use the timber for building, furniture and fuel
21 of 32
What is rain forest land needed for?
for agriculture such as growing crops and grazing animals (cattle ranching)
22 of 32
What are some reasons humans want the rain forest land?
transport routes, building human settlements, building dams and power stations to provide power
23 of 32
What do the lake district national park do the protect the biosphere?
special rules and regulations, speed ban, footpaths to stop footpath erosion (signposts as well), planning permission
24 of 32
Features of RAMSAR
global 168 countries have signed up, the international treaty protects wetlands by law
25 of 32
What can rock and soil type affect about a biosphere?
how fertile different areas within the biome are
26 of 32
How does altitude affect the biosphere?
different plants grow at different temperatures and may not survive if they aren't in the right temperatures
27 of 32
The higher the altitude
the lower the temperature
28 of 32
How does rainfall affect the biosphere?
different types of plants and the amounts of plants will only grow with a certain amount of rainfall. Inland is usually drier than coast
29 of 32
How does distance from the sea affect the biosphere?
it can affect the temperature and especially the amounts of rain within the same biome
30 of 32
How can drainage affect the biosphere?
swamps and bogs occur where drainage is poor. Fewer more specialist plants grow in boggy areas
31 of 32
What does sustainable biosphere management do?
ensures ecosystem will recover quickly from any use, prevents damage to the environment/ ecosystem, helps locals to understand the benefits from their environment/ecosystem, helps locals understand why it is important and managing will help them
