Bioloy Unit 1 Flashcards

?
How do you test for air pollution?
By using Lichen as they are very sensitive to CO2 levels. High numbers of lichen means good air.
1 of 27
How to you test for water pollution?
By using Mayfly Larve, as if you find them it is clean water as they are sensitive to the concentration of dissolved Oxygen in water. Large numbers indicate clean water.
2 of 27
What does auxin control?
The growth of light Phototropism, geotropism and moisture.
3 of 27
What is phototropism?
The growth of a plant in response to light.
4 of 27
What is geotropism/gravitropism?
The growth of a plant in response to gravity
5 of 27
What is a stimulus?
A change in your environment which you may need to react to.
6 of 27
How many sense organs are there?
Five
7 of 27
What do sense organs contain?
Receptors.
8 of 27
Which receptors contain chemical stimuli?
Smell and taste receptors.
9 of 27
What happens in the CNS?
The information from the organs is sent and where the reflexes and actions are coordinated.
10 of 27
What do receptors convert stimulus energy (e.g light energy) into?
Electrical impulses.
11 of 27
What do neurones do?
Transmit information very quickly to and from the brain.
12 of 27
What do synapses connect?
Neurones.
13 of 27
What do you call the connection between two neurones?
A synapse.
14 of 27
Nerves signals are transferred as what across the synapse gap?
Chemicals.
15 of 27
Once nerve signals have been diffused across a synapse, what are the chemicals then set of as to the next neurone?
A new electrical signal.
16 of 27
Where do the neurones in the reflex arc go through?
The spinal cord or an unconscious part of the brain.
17 of 27
When a stimulus is detected by a receptor, impulses are sent from the sensory neurone to where?
The central nervous system (CNS)
18 of 27
Why is a reflex quicker than a conscious reaction?
Because you don't have to think about it.
19 of 27
What is homeostasis?
All the functions of your body which try to maintain a 'constant internal environment'.
20 of 27
Where is Ion content regulated?
The kidneys.
21 of 27
How are Ions removed?
Through sweat and urine.
22 of 27
Name the three ways in which water is lost.
Through the skin as sweat, the lungs as we breathe, and via the kidneys in urine.
23 of 27
Where is body temperature controlled?
The brain.
24 of 27
What temperature do the enzymes in the human body work best?
37 degrees.
25 of 27
What hormone maintains the right level of glucose in your blood?
Insulin.
26 of 27
Why is it important not to over-subscribe antibiotics?
Because the bacteria would gradually develop resistant strains, therefore making the antibiotics useless.
