What are microorganisms?

Describe how microorganisms can be sampled and grown safely in the laboratory.
Sample various micro-organisms from parts of the room and then spead the various Micro-organisms you have collected on to the surface of the nutrient agar plate.

What is the difference in structure between bacteria, fungi and viruses?
Bacteria are single celled, Viruses are not cells, Fungi have more than one cell.

Name a disease caused by bacteria and name the symptoms.
Bacteria can cause scarlet fever, the symptoms are swollen neck glands loss of appetite nausea or vomiting red lines in the folds of the body then after the rash has gone a white coating on the tongue.

Name a disease caused by virus and name the symptoms.
Viruses can cause chickenpox symptoms are fever and raised red spots with yellow tops.

Name a disease caused by fungi and name the symptoms.
Athlete's foot is caused by fungi and the symptoms are itchy skin which may also be red, scaly, flaky and dry usually a rash develops between the toes of the person who has been infected.

How can micro-organisms enter the body?
Through our wounds, our airways, our food and our eyes.

Name 2 ways that our body defends us against micro-organisms.
Tears contain the enzyme lysozyme that breaks open the cell wall or bacteria. Stomach acid and protease enzymes can kill and digest Micro-organisms.
