Why is the worlds population increasing?
Access to medicines and better farming methods
1 of 16
What four human activities reduce the amount of land and resources?
Buildings, farming, dumping waste - landfill sites, quarrying for metal ions
2 of 16
What are two important greenhouse gases? What do they do?
Carbon dioxide and methane - trap the heat in the earth
3 of 16
What are the names of five important carbon stores?
Oceans, lakes, ponds, green plants and peat bogs
4 of 16
What does deforestation mean?
Cutting down trees in a forest
5 of 16
What four main problems does it lead to?
More methane in the atmosphere, more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, less carbon dioxide taken in, less diodiversity
6 of 16
Why would people cut down trees?
Use for land for farming: cattle, rice, crops; use for paper, provide timber
7 of 16
Why would we destroy peat bogs?
Use area after its been drained for farmland, dried peat can be burnt for fuel, compost
8 of 16
Why is this a problem?
Carbon dioxide is relased when the bog is drained and burnt, less biodiversity
9 of 16
What is a biofuel?
A fuel made by plants or waste material grown recently
10 of 16
How do we produce biofuels?
By bacteria breaking down sugars in plants by anaerobic fermentation
11 of 16
What are the two main gases in biogas?
Methane (70%) and Carbon Dioxide (30%)
12 of 16
What are the two main types of biogas generator?
Batch generator (makes biogas in small batches) and continuous generator (makes biogas all the time)
13 of 16
What is mycoprotein?
A protein made from fungi - used in vegetarian meat subsitute
14 of 16
Why would being a vetegarian help global food shortages?
Energy is lost at each stage of a food chain. The fewer stages in the food chain, the more efficent it would be. So eating the primary produces (plants) is better to get energy than meat
15 of 16
What two ways can help us maintain fish stocks?
Fishing quotas (limits of the number of fish you have), net size (smaller fish can get away)
