Eukaryotic
One of the three domains. A cell with a number of distinctive features separating them from prokaryotic cells
1 of 22
Prokaryotic
One of the three domains. Has two main groups; true bacteria and blue-green bacteria
2 of 22
Nucleus
A large organelle which carries a cell's gentic material and is responsible for the control of its activities
3 of 22
Nucleolus
A dark staining body found in the nucleus of a cell
4 of 22
Ribosomes
A very small organelle which plays an important part in making proteins
5 of 22
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of membranes found in the cytoplasm of a cell that is studed with ribosomes
6 of 22
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
A network of membranes found in the cytoplasm of a cell that is smooth
7 of 22
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle that is responsible for the processing and packaging of substances produced by a cell
8 of 22
Lysozymes
An organelle containing digestive enzymes
9 of 22
Mitochondria
A cell organelle in which the biochemical reactions associated with aerobic respiration take place. It is surrounded by an evolope consisting of two membranes. The inner one is folded to form a cristae
10 of 22
Centrioles
Small hollow cylinders which are found in animal cells which are assiociated with the separation of chromosomes in mitosis
11 of 22
Cristae
Folded inner membranes of mitochondria
12 of 22
Spindle
Microtubles that is involved in oganising chromosomes during cell division
13 of 22
Exocytosis
A process which involves the transport of materials out of cells
14 of 22
Plasmid
A small circular piece of DNA found in bacteria and certain other organisms
15 of 22
Cell Wall
A rigid layer which surrounds individual cells of plants, bacteria and fungi. It provides support and contains cellulose
16 of 22
Cell Cycle
The continuous cylce of cell growth and cell division. There are three main stages: Synthesis, growth 1 and growth 2
17 of 22
Synthesis Stage
This is where DNA is replicated and each chromosome end up with two chromatids joined at the centromere. DNA volumne doubles.
18 of 22
Growth 1 Stage
Cells grow and performs their normal function and organelles are replicated
19 of 22
Growth 2 Stage
This is the period between syntheis and mitosis and where centrioles replicate
20 of 22
Mitosis
A type of nuclear division which results in each daughter having the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. There are 4 stages, which are Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase
21 of 22
Cytokinesis
A stage after mitosis
