Biology Unit 2

?
Name all 7 classification groups.
Kingdom - Phylum - Class - Order - Family - Genus - Species.
1 of 35
In how many ways can organisms be classified in?
Two ways - Artificial and Natural Systems.
2 of 35
What is a Natural System?
A Natural System is based on evolutionary relationships. Animals that are more closely related are more likely to be in the same group.
3 of 35
What is an Artificial System?
An Artificial System is based on one or two characteristics that make identification easier. E.G. a bird that lives on the sea can be called a seabird.
4 of 35
All organisms are named by the what?
The Binomial System.
5 of 35
What is the Binomial System?
Its how all organisms are named.
6 of 35
How does the Binomial system work?
Two parts to the name. - First is genus and second is species - Genus part starts with a capital letter and species the part starts with a lower-case letter.
7 of 35
Organisms are classified in discrete groups, this causes problems with...?
Intermediate organisms - Hybrids - Asexual organism.
8 of 35
What can organisms do?
Eat each other (predators) - Gain from each other (mutualism) - Feed of each other (parasites)
9 of 35
Who came up with the idea of using the classification system?
Carl Linnaeus.
10 of 35
What can Pyramids of numbers and biomass both represent.
They can both represent feeding relationships between organisms in a food chain or web.
11 of 35
Why are Pyramids of biomass hard to construct?
Some organisms feed on organisms different trophic levels.
12 of 35
Pyramids of biomass can show relationships of what?
They can show feeding relationships.
13 of 35
What is Trophic?
Trophic is the manner in which energy moves through and ecosystem.
14 of 35
What does each ecosystem have?
Each ecosystem has its own Trophic System.
15 of 35
What do Photosynthetic Organisms do?
They capture energy from the sunlight, CO2 and H2O.
16 of 35
Most producers are what?
Photosynthetic.
17 of 35
What do Chemosynthetic organisms do?
They capture energy from chemical compounds in the surrounding.
18 of 35
What do Consumers (Heterotrophs) eat?
They eat only plants and fungi.
19 of 35
What do Omnivores eat?
Omnivores eat both plant, fungi and animals.
20 of 35
What do Carnivores eat?
They eat only animals.
21 of 35
What do Detritivores eat?
They eat dead organic matter.
22 of 35
What do Decomposers do?
They break down organic matter into similar compounds.
23 of 35
Name the seven life processes (MRS GREN).
M-Movement, R-Respiration, S-Sensitivity, G-Growth, R-Reproduction, E-Excretion, N-Nutrition.
24 of 35
What does the recycling of carbon involve?
Photosynthesis - Feeding - Respiration - Decomposition.
25 of 35
Named the four bacteria responsible for the recycling of Nitrogen.
Bacteria - Nitrifying Bacteria - Denitrifying Bacteria - Nitrogen- fixing bacteria.
26 of 35
Organism in hot, dry area have adaptations to?
Increase heat loss - Move on sand - Cope with lack of water.
27 of 35
Organism in cold area have adapted to?
Keep warm - Move on the snow.
28 of 35
Charles Darwins theory of natural selection involves what?
Variation competition - Survival of the fittest and selective reproduction.
29 of 35
There is an increase of bad pollutants in the are such as?
Carbon Dioxide which causes global warming - Sulphur Dioxide which cause acid rain and CFCs which break down the ozone layer.
30 of 35
How is Carbon Dioxide and Sulphur Dioxide released into the air?
By burning fossil fuels, which increases the greenhouse effect and global warming.
31 of 35
How are CFCs released into the air?
They are released from aerosols.
32 of 35
Conservation is important to.
Protect our food supply - Prevent damage to food chains - Protect organism for medical uses - Protect habitats for people to visit.
33 of 35
What is meant by sustainable development?
Sustainable development means taking enough resources from the environment for current needs.
34 of 35
What are whales used for?
Their skin is used for handbags, belts and shoes. - Their teeth is used for buttons - piano keys and their liver is used in oil.
