What is the Menstrual Cycle?
The monthly release of an egg from a woman's ovaries, and the build up and break down of the protective lining of the uterus (womb)

How many stages does the menstrual cycle have?

Stage 1?
Bleeding starts- The uterus lining breaks down from day 1 to day 4
3 of 6
Stage 2?
The uterus lining builds up again from day 4 to 14 into a thick spongy layer of blood vessels, ready to receive a fertilised egg

Stage 3?
An egg is released at day 14
5 of 6
Stage 4?
The wall is then maintained for about 14 days, until day 28. If no fertilised egg has landed on the uterus wall by day 28, the spongy lining starts to break down again and the cycle begins again
