Active Immunity
Resistance to disease resulting from the activities of an individual's own system whereby an antigen induces plasma cells to produce antibodies.
1 of 16
Passive Immunity
Resistance to a disease that is acquired from the introduction of antibodies from another individual, rather than an individual's own immune system.
2 of 16
Active Transport
The movement of molecules or ions into or out of a cell from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration using energy and carrier molecules.
3 of 16
Antibody
A protein produced by lymphocytes in response to the presence of a specific antigen.
4 of 16
Antigen
A protein that triggers an immune response.
5 of 16
Lymphocytes
Types of white blood cell responsible for the immune response. They become activated in the presence of antigens.
6 of 16
B lymphocyte
A type of white blood cell that is produced and matures within bone marrow. They produce antibodies as part of their role in immunity.
7 of 16
T lymphocyte
A type of white blood cell that is produced in the bone marrow and matures in the thymus gland. They coordinate the immune response and kill infected cells.
8 of 16
Centrifugation
The process of separating out particles of different sizes and densities by spinning them at high speed in a centrifuge.
9 of 16
Facilitated Diffusion
Diffusion involving the presence of protein carrier molecules to allow the passive movement of substances across plasma membranes.
10 of 16
SAN
Acts as the pacemaker of the hart, sends electrical impulses.
11 of 16
Systole
Contracting
12 of 16
Diastole
Relaxing
13 of 16
Turgid
Water enters cell via osmosis, protoplast swells and pushes against the cell wall.
14 of 16
Incipient Plasmolysis
Water neither enters nor leaves cell, no change in protoplast, it begins to pull away from the cell wall.
15 of 16
Plasmolysis
Water leaves cell via osmosis, protoplast shrinks and completely pulls away from cell wall.
