What does the circulatory system do?
It transports substances around the body
1 of 15
What is the heart and what does it do?
an organ that pumps blood around the body
2 of 15
What is the wall of the heart made of?
muscle tissue
3 of 15
Describe how blood enters the heart
Blood enters the two atria from the vena cava and the pulmonary vein. The atria contract and force blood into ventricles. The ventricles contract, forcing the blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta.
4 of 15
How many chambers are they?
Four chambers (2 atria and ventricles). left side is MY RIGHT and vice versa. left has oxygenated and right has deoxygenated.
5 of 15
Whar do valves do?
prevent backflow
6 of 15
Which vessel flows from the heart to the organs?
arteries
7 of 15
Which vessel takes the blood back to the heart?
vein
8 of 15
What does a double circulatory system mean?
One for the lungs and one for all the other organs
9 of 15
What do arteries do?
carry blood from the heart to the organs (lungs or body)
10 of 15
What are some properties of the arteries?
tick, muscular, elastic, small lumen (if narrowed may use stents to open up), high pressure, no valves
11 of 15
Give some properties of veins
thinner walls, flexible, large lumen, low pressure, valves present to prevent backflow
12 of 15
What do veins do?
carry blood from the organs to the heart
13 of 15
What are capillaries?
very narrow, thin-walled blood vessels in the organs for blood to flow through next to the cells
14 of 15
How are capillaries adapted to let substances in an dout?
1 cell thick walls - short diffusion path,
