What is blood?
A tissue that consists of a fluid called plasma in which red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are suspended

What does blood plasma transport?
carbon dioxide from the organs to the lungs, soluble products of digestion from the small intestine to other organs, urea from the liver to the kidneys

What do red blood cells do?
transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs

What do red blood cells contain and what does it do?
a red pigment called haemoglobin which combines with oxygen in the lungs to form oxyhaemoglobin and splits up in organs

How is it adapted to work efficientyl?
no nucleus, biconcave, thin outer membrane

What are white blood cells?
cells that form part of the body's defence system against microorganisms (have no nucleus)

What are the two types of white cell?
phagocytes - engulf and digest microorganisms, lymphocytes produce antibodies

What are platelets?
small fragments of cells that help blood to clot at the site of a wound (have no nucleus)
