draw a diagram of: cell, genes, chromosomes, nucleus (in order of largest to smallest)
Cell, Nucleus, Chromosomes, Genes
1 of 18
What are the two sources of variation (give two examples)
Genes and Environment (1. height & 2. tattoos)
2 of 18
How do genes control what a cell does?
genes are the instructions for making proteins; they control the proteins a cell makes
3 of 18
What are structural proteins?
used to build the body (e.g. collagen to build tendons)
4 of 18
What are functional proteins?
they take part in the chemical reactions of the body (e.g enzymes used in digestion - amylase)
5 of 18
Describe Huntington's disease: include what it is, how it is caused, symptoms, what allele it takes AND arguments for and against genetic testing for Huntington's
. . .
6 of 18
Describe Cystic Fibrosis disease: include what it is, how it is caused, symptoms, what allele it takes AND arguments for and against genetic testing for Cystic Fibrosis
. . .
7 of 18
What is a carrier?
Someone who has one copy of a faulty allele but does not have the disease themselves.
8 of 18
What i the human genome?
the knowledge of people's individual makeup and all of the human genes
9 of 18
Name and describe MRS. C GREN
movement, respiration, sensitivity, control, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition
10 of 18
make diagrams of an animal cell and plant cell
. . .
11 of 18
describe the lock and key model
. . .
12 of 18
give the word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + (energy)
13 of 18
give the word equation for anaerobic respiration
glucose = lactic acid + (energy)
14 of 18
give the word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast
glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide + (some energy)
15 of 18
What is aerobic respiration?
respiration requiring OXYGEN
16 of 18
what is anaerobic respiration?
takes place when there is not enough oxygen but energy is required. This happens when an athlete runs very fast but the body cannot supply enough oxygen. The only reactant is glucose! The product is lactic acid.
17 of 18
What is the oxygen debt?
To get rid of lactic acid the person will pant in order to get a good supply of oxygen. It will convert painful lactic acid to harmless carbon dioxide and water
