What part of the body secretes FSH?
The pituitary gland secretes FSH
1 of 20
What part of the body secretes oestrogen?
The ovaries secrete oestrogen
2 of 20
What is the function of the hormone LH?
LH causes the mature egg to be released from the ovary
3 of 20
Oral contraceptives are likely to contain which hormones?
Oral contraceptives contains oestrogen and progesterone (another hormone)
4 of 20
Which hormones may be used in fertility treatment?
FSH and LH are used in fertility treatment
5 of 20
What does FSH do?
FSH causes an egg to mature in an ovary and it stimulates the ovaries to release the hormone oestrogen
6 of 20
What does oestrogen do?
Oestrogen stops FSH being produced - so that only one egg matures in a cycle and it stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation (the release of the mature egg from the ovary).
7 of 20
What day of the cycle is the egg released on?
The egg is released on day 14 of the menstrual cycle
8 of 20
How do contraceptive pills work?
The contraceptive pill contains oestrogen this inhibits the production of FSH, which in turn stops eggs maturing in the ovaries
9 of 20
What is the benefit of contraceptive pills?
Contraceptive pills are good because it allows couples to choose when they want to start their family and when they want to stop having children
10 of 20
What are the risks of contraceptive pills?
The first birth-control pills contained higher amounts of oestrogen so had significant side effects, such as changes in weight, mood and blood pressure.Today pills contain less so have less side effects
11 of 20
Why do some women have difficulties becoming pregnant?
Some women have difficulty becoming pregnant because they don't produce enough FSH to allow their eggs to mature
12 of 20
What do fertility drugs do?
Fertility drugs stimulate eggs to mature in the ovary
13 of 20
What do fertility drugs contain?
Fertility drugs contain FSH and LH
14 of 20
What are the risks of using fertility treatments to get pregnant?
Fertility treatments do not always work, also because the treatment boosts the production of mature eggs twins and triplets are more likely, but sometimes complications in the pregnancy could lead to a premature birth
15 of 20
What is IVF (In Vitro fertilisation)?
IVF is when a couple have trouble conceiving children so they get the woman's egg fertilised outside her body and then implanted back into her uterus
16 of 20
What happens between Day 1 and 14 of the menstrual cycle?
The new egg matures in the ovaries
17 of 20
What says of the menstrual cycle is the new egg in the womb?
From day 20 to 28
18 of 20
How does the menstrual cycle work?
Once a month, a surge of hormones from the pituitary gland in the brain starts eggs maturing in the ovaries. The hormones also stimulate the ovaries to produce oestrogen
19 of 20
Once FSH stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen what happens?
After FSH stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen the oestrogen (which is secreted by the ovaries) stimulates the lining of the womb to build up for pregnancy, it also inhibits the production of FSH
