What does the nervous system do?
It enables us to react to our surroundings and coordinate our behaviour
1 of 15
What are receptors?
Cells that detect stimuli
2 of 15
What are stimuli?
Changes in the environment
3 of 15
Name two receptor located on the head that detect waves
In the eye- light. In the ears - sound
4 of 15
Where is the receptor that enables us to keep our balance?
In the ears - changes in position
5 of 15
What are the stimuli that receptors in the skin can detect?
Touch, pressure, pain and temperature
6 of 15
What are receptors on the tongue and in the nose sensitive to?
Chemicals that enable us to taste and smell
7 of 15
Light receptor cells have...
... a nucleus, cytoplasm and a cell membrane
8 of 15
What happens when a receptor detects a change?
Information from receptors passes along neurones in nerves to the brain. The brain coordinates a response.
9 of 15
Describe a reflex action in two words.
Automatic and rapid
10 of 15
Which neurones do they involve?
Sensory, relay and motor neurones
11 of 15
What happens first in a simple reflex action?
1. impulses from a receptor pass along a sensory neurone to the central nervous system
12 of 15
What happens first in the central nervous system during a reflex action?
2. At a junction (synapse) between a sensory neurone and a relay neurone in the CNS, a chemical is released that causes an impulse to be sent along a relay neurone
13 of 15
What happens second in the CNS during a reflex action?
A chemical is then released at the synapse between a relay neurone and motor neurone in the CNS, causing impulses to be sent along a motor neurone to the organ (effector) that brings about the response
14 of 15
What is an effector and how does it work?
It's either a muscle or gland, a muscle responds by contracting and a gland responds by secreting chemical substances.
