biology - microorganisms for food

?
what are microorganisms used for?
bread (yeast), yoghurt (lactobacillus bacteria), mycoprotein (fusarium fungus), beer/ wine (yeast).
1 of 5
What is the process of making yoghurt?
1.) fresh milk is warmed to about 40 degrees. 2.) a culture of bacteria (lactobacillus bulgaricus) is added 3.) the bacteria turns the lactose to lactic acid 4.) it makes the mixture sour and thicker
2 of 5
Advantages to using microorganisms for food;
They grow quickly meaning they reproduce more than animals or plants, they are easier to handle, fermentors only need a small area and dosnt depend on climate, the waste products from other products can be used for nutrients for the fermentor
3 of 5
how is the speed for making yoghurt differ?
its dependent on the bacteria used
4 of 5
how does microorganisms benifit vegetarians?
it can substitute meat for the mycoprotein, high on protein, low in fat and not related to animals.
