Define diffusion
The passive movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
1 of 10
Define osmosis
The passive movement of water molecules, across a partially permeable membrane, from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration
2 of 10
Define enzyme
A globular protein functioning as a biological catalyst in chemical reactions
3 of 10
Define active site
The site on the surface of an enzyme to which substrate or substrates bind and which catalyses a chemical reaction involving the substrate
4 of 10
Define denaturation
The structural change in a protein that results in the loss (usually permanent) of biological properties
5 of 10
Define pathogen
An organism or virus that causes a disease
6 of 10
Define resting potential
The electrical potential across the plasma membrane of a cell that is not conducting an impulse
7 of 10
Define action potential
The depolarization and repolarization of the electrical potential across the plasma membrane of a cell, as an electrical impulse passes along it
8 of 10
Define depolarization
The reversal of the electrical potential across the plasma membrane
9 of 10
Define repolarization
The restoration of the electrical potential across the plasma membrane
