?
The human population is growing exponentially, which means what?
Raw materials used up quickly, more waste, pollution, less land (due to farming, quarrying, building, dumping waste).
1 of 18
Waste by humans may pollute...?
Water- sewage, fertilisers, toxic chemials, Air- Smoke, gases, acid rain. Land- Pesticides/herbicides.
2 of 18
Give to ways gases are released into the atmosphere?
1) Increase in cattle and rice fields (Methane). 2) Buring of wood and industrial burning (C02).
3 of 18
A rise in the Earths temperature leads to...?
Significant climate change. Rise in sea levels. Reduced biodiversity. Change in migration patterns. Changes in distribution of species.
4 of 18
Give examples of what land created by deforestation is used for?
Crops for biofuels based on ethanol. Cattle and rice fields to provide more food.
5 of 18
Deforestation has...?
Increased the release of C02. Reduced the rate of photosynthesis removing C02 from atmosphere. increased the amount of methane.
6 of 18
What does Biodiversity mean?
The range of species in a habitat.
7 of 18
Why is it important to conserve Biodiversity?
Species maybe needed for future use.
8 of 18
What is a Biofuel?
A fuel thats biological. It takes in as much C02, as it gives out. (Carbon netural)
9 of 18
How is biofuel made?
Orginates from plants. Mixed with ordinary disel.
10 of 18
What are biofeuls being used for?
American lorries, car users.
11 of 18
Bioethanol:
From sugar canses, which contain a carbohydrate called sucrose. + Maize + Enzyme and glucose = Fermented glucose&sucrose, which is anerobically fermented to make ethanol.
12 of 18
Disadvantages of bioethanol?
Expensive. Modified engines. Smells. Need space to grow crops (deforestation). Crops grow slowy. Moral reasons.
13 of 18
Two ways bogas is formed?
1) Bacterial breakdown of plant material. 2) Anerobic breakdown of animal waste.
14 of 18
Why are biogas generators stored underground?
Soil helps insulate walls... to keep it warm/cool.
15 of 18
Describe the process that occurs in the biogas generator?
Faeces is placed into the generator. Bacteria is added to allow fermentation. The anerobic respiration produces methane.
16 of 18
Quorn is high in what?
Protein&Fungus
17 of 18
How is Quorn made?
Fungus grown on glucose syrup in aerobic conditions. Vitimins and minerals added to keep fungus healthy.
