What is the job of the kidney?
Maintain the concentration of dissolved substances in the blood. Regulate the amount of water/ions and remove all urea.
1 of 9
Firts step of the kidneys?
1) Filteration. Lots of water/small molecules are squeezed out of the blood into tublets.
2 of 9
Second step of the kidneys?
2) Reabsorbtion. All sugars, plus any water/ions needed by the body reasbored into the blood.
3 of 9
Thrird step of the kidneys?
3) Excretion of waste. Excess water/ions and all urea passed to the bladder in form of urine.
4 of 9
Explain the steps of a Dialysis Machine?
1) Blood separated from dialysis fluid by partially permeable membrane. 2) Membrane allows urea and excess substances to pass from the blood to the dialysis fluid. 3) Concentration of dissolved substances in blood are restored to normal levels.
5 of 9
Benefits/problems of Dialysis machine?
B- Prolongs life, don't need a donor. P- Time consuming, blot clots, expensive, restricted diet.
6 of 9
Benefits/problems of a kidney transplant?
B- Prevents high blood presure, no infections, no build-up of intoxins. P- Need a donor, rejection, use of immuno-suppressant drugs, dangers during opp.
7 of 9
Insulin converts glucose into what?
Glycogen, which is stored in the liver.
8 of 9
What does the second hormone, glucagon
Converts glycogen into glucose and released into the blood, if blood glucose levels fall too low.
