Biology- Functions of the blood

Questions about different components of blood

?
What is plasma and what does it do?
Plasma is the liquid part of the blood and it carries the blood cells, digested food products, plateleyts, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones and heat energy.
1 of 10
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen to different parts of the body.
2 of 10
What are the two types of white blood cell called?
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes.
3 of 10
Do red blood cells have a nucleus? Why/why not?
No as without a nucleus, there is more room to transport oxygen.
4 of 10
What are platelets and what is their purpose?
Small fragments of cells that clump together and clot to prevent too much blood loss when you cut yourself. They also prevent microbes from entering the blood stream.
5 of 10
Red blood cells have a biconcave shape- why?
So that there is a large surface area for absorbing oxygen.
6 of 10
What else do red blood cells carry and what does it do?
Haemoglobin which contains iron. In the lungs, it reacts with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin. In the body tissues, the oxygen is released again.
7 of 10
Lymphocytes do what?
Some fire specific antibodies at pathogens. Others become memory cells and recognise certain pathogens which results in an efficient attack if the pathogen ever comes into contact with the body again.
8 of 10
What are the chemical markers on pathogens called?
Antigens.
9 of 10
What are phagocytes and what do they do?
They are white blood cells which ingest pathogens. They are not specific and so they ingest anything that isn't supposed to be there.
