Temperature receptors detect that the core body temperature is too high.
Process centre (hypothalamus)-Effectors (sweat glands)
1 of 9
Temperature receptors detect that the core body temperature is too low.
Process centre (hypothalamus)- Effectors (muscles)
2 of 9
When you're too hot...
Vasodilation (Blood vessels get bigger in diameter)/ Sweat glands produce more sweat.
3 of 9
When you're too cold...
Vasconstriction (Blood vessels get smaller in diameter)/ Shiver (muscles contract rapidly)
4 of 9
Blood sugar level rises rapidly...
Pancreas releases insulin-Sugar removed from blood-Blood sugar level falls.
5 of 9
Type 1 diabetes...
Pancreas stops producing insulin/ Blood sugar level can rise to a dangerous level/ controlled by injecting insulin.
6 of 9
Type 2 diabetes...
Develops later in life/ A poor diet or obesity can increase the risk of diabetes/ Body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't respond/Controlled by exercising and a carefully controlled diet.
7 of 9
Microorganisms
Reproduce rapidly/ Plasmids (GM)/ Simple biochemistry/ Can make complex molecules (difficult to reproduce artificially)/ No ethical concerns.
8 of 9
Products of microorganisms
Antibiotics/ Food made from fungi/ Enzymes for making food/ Enzymes for making washing powder/ Biofuels.
