What is osmosis?
The net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane.
1 of 13
What is water potential?
A measure of the ability of water molecules to move freely in solution.
2 of 13
What does isotonic mean?
Isotonic is relating to a solution having the same osmotic pressure as some other solution, e.g one in a cell or a body fluid.
3 of 13
What is the word for a plant cell that has no water?
Plasmolysed
4 of 13
What is the word for a animal cell that has no water?
Crenated- shrivelled
5 of 13
What is the word for a plant cell that has lots of water?
Turgid
6 of 13
What is the word for a animal cell that has lots of water?
Haemolysed
7 of 13
Does pure water have a high or low water potential?
High water potential- high number of water molecules
8 of 13
What is diffusion?
The net movement of molecules or ions in a gas or liquid from an area of high concentration to an area where they are less concentrated.
9 of 13
What is a diffusion gradient?
The gradient in molecular concentration (the difference in concentrations) that allow diffusion to occur.
10 of 13
What do both osmosis and diffusion have in common?
They are both passive processes they don't need energy. They are both a net movement and both aim to reach equilibrium.
11 of 13
What are the differences between osmosis and diffusion?
osmosis is water molecules, diffusion is gas and other liquids like oil/petrol. Diffusion doesn't have a partially permeable membrane.
12 of 13
What are the 6 ways you can speed up diffusion?
Concentration gradient, size of molecule, thickness of cell membrane, blood moving/stirring, temperature and surface area.
