Term of translocation?
Movement of assimilates (e.g surcrose) to where they are needed in a plant (sink).
1 of 6
Term and example of a source?
Source is where assimilates are produced. Example - leaves.
2 of 6
Term and example of a sink?
Sink is where assimilates are used up. Example - a bud
3 of 6
What are enzymes used for in translocation?
Maintain a concentration gradient from source to sink, by changing the dissolved substances at the sink.
4 of 6
What is the theory of translocation?
Mass Flow Hypothesis
5 of 6
How does mass flow hypothesis work?
1. active transport load the assimilates into the sieve tubes of the phloem at source - lowers the water potential inside sieve tubes. Water enters by osmosis from the xylem cells. High pressure inside of sieve tubes.
