What is recombinant DNA?
Its the use of technology to make genetically modified organisms.

A plasmid is removed from a bacterium.

The insulin gene is cut out of a human chromosome using a restriction enzyme, this leaves it with 'sticky ends'.

The plasmid is cut open using the same restriction enzyme, leaving it with 'sticky ends.'

What is the fourth step of making human insulin?
The plasmid and the human insulin gene are mixed together, ligase is added joing the 'sticky ends' to create recombinant DNA.

What is the fifth step of making human insulin?
The recombinant DNA is inserted into a bacterium.

What is the last step of making human insulin?
The modified bacterium is grown in a fermenter, which ends up with millions of bacteria that produce insulin for people with diabetes.

What does a transgenic organism mean?
It means that the organism is made up of different things, from other organisms (flavonoids for example). Meaning they contain a gene from another species.
