Biology Core classification

?
What are the 5 kingdoms?
Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Prokaryotae, Protoctista
1 of 25
What are the several further ranks before we reach a decision on a particular species?
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Note:Kevin Plays Carinet Or Flute - Grotty Sound!
2 of 25
What is Binomial classification?
formal system of naming species of living things by giving each a name composed of two parts, the Genus name and the
3 of 25
why is binomial classification important?
because it clearly identifies species, study and conserve species, target conservation efforts.
4 of 25
What are the characteristics of the kingdom: animalia?
multicellular, no cell wall or chlorophyll, heterotrophic feeders*all multicellular animals.
5 of 25
What are the characteristics of the kingdom: plantae?
Multicellular, have cell walls and chlorophyll, autotrophic feeders*all green plants.
6 of 25
What are the characteristics of the kingdom: Fungi?
Multicellular, have cell walls, dont have chlorophyll, saprophytic feeders
7 of 25
What are the characteristics of the kingdom: Protoctista?
Usually unicellular, with a nucleus
8 of 25
What are the characteristics of the kingdom: Prokaryotes?
Unicellular, with no nucleus
9 of 25
what is the classification name for humans?
Homo Sapiens
10 of 25
What is the name of the single celled organism that is difficult to classify and why?
called Euglena, it has Chloroplasts like a plant, but no cell wall like an animal and a flagellum to swim like bacteria.
11 of 25
Why do scientists not classify Viruses as a living thing?
Because it does not show all seven processes of life, and when it enters a cell it changes the way a cell works so it can make copies of the virus.
12 of 25
what are vertebrates?
animals with a backbone
13 of 25
What features do scientists seperate the vertebrate group by into smaller groups?
how the animal takes in oxygen(gills, lungs, skin), thermoregulation (homotherm, or poikilotherms), reproduction (external/internal or oviparous/viviparous)
14 of 25
What does oviparous and Viviparous mean?
Oviparous:Lay eggs, viviparous:Give birth to live young
15 of 25
What does homeotherm or poikilotherm mean?
homeotherm:maintains own temp, poikilotherm:temp varies with surroundings
16 of 25
What are the 5 vertebrate groups?
Fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, mammal.
17 of 25
what are the characteristics of the vertebrate: fish?
gills, external fertilization, oviparous, poikilotherm.
18 of 25
what are the characteristics of the vertebrate:amphibian?
lungs/gills, external fertilisiation, oviparous, poikilotherm.
19 of 25
what are the characteristics of the vertebrate: reptiles?
lungs, external fertilisation, oviparous, poikilotherm.
20 of 25
what are the characteristics of the vertebrate: Bird?
Lungs, internal ferilisation, oviparous, homeotherm.
21 of 25
what are the characteristics of the vertebrate: mammal?
lungs, internal fertilisation, viviparous, homeotherm.
22 of 25
why is classification complicated sometimes?
Variety within a species, hybridisation, ring species.
23 of 25
what is hybridisation?
closely related species breed to produce offspring that have characteristics of both – the hybrids are often infertile
24 of 25
what is a ring species?
neighbouring populations of species may have slightly different characteristics but can still interbreed as part of a chain but the two ends of the chain can’t interbreed.
