Biology: Chapter 4

HideShow resource information
What are desert animals adapted to?
To save water and keep cool
1 of 16
How does having a large surface area compared to volume help desert animals in their environment?
To be able to lose more body heat; stop them from overheating
2 of 16
What do animals in hot climates have larger ears than similar animals in cold climates?
Big ears lose heat quickly, while small ears lose heat slowly
3 of 16
How does being efficient with water help desert animals in their environment?
They lose less water by producing small amounts of concentrated urine.
4 of 16
Why do camels have humps?
To be able to store fat without insulating the whole body
5 of 16
Why do desert animals camouflage?
-To avoid predators -To sneak up on prey
6 of 16
Why do bees have black and yellow stripes?
The stripes warn other animals that bees are dangerous
7 of 16
What are arctic animals adapted to?
They are adapted to reduce heat loss
8 of 16
Why are polar bears white?
To camouflage them, so their prey cannot see them
9 of 16
How are arctic animals well insulated?
They have a thick layer of blubber for insulation / Thick hairy coats to keep body heat in
10 of 16
What do plants need to survive?
Light, water, space and minerals
11 of 16
What do animals compete for?
Space (territory), food, water and mates
12 of 16
Organisms that are tolerant to high levels of salt, high temperatures or high pressures are called?
Extremophiles
13 of 16
How can you measure air pollution?
By looking at types of lichen; that are sensitive to sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. If the air is clean, there are lots of lichen
14 of 16
How are cactis' adapted to their enviroment?
They have stems that can store water, spines instead of leaves to minimise surface area and water loss,
15 of 16
How do cactis' protect themselves from predators?
They have sharp spines protecting the cactus from predators
