Biology Cells

?
What 3 characteristics do both animal and plant cells share?
Cell surface membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus
1 of 11
What differs?
Plants also have a cellulose cell wall, starch, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts whereas animals have secretory vesicles, vacuoles and glycogen
2 of 11
Where is the starch situated?
In the cytoplasm or chloroplasts
3 of 11
What is the function of glycogen and starch?
to store carbohydrates
4 of 11
What is the difference between a vacuole in an animal cell and a large permanent vacuole in a plant cell?
Vacuoles in animal cells are small and temporary and can be involved in digestion whereas large permanent vacuoles contain water necessary to provide turgor pressure
5 of 11
What is the function of secretory vesicles?
they contain cell products such as hormones or enzymes
6 of 11
What is the function of chloroplasts?
they contain the pigment chlorophyll, for light absorption, and enzymes for production of glucose by photosynthesis
7 of 11
What are the functions of these 3 characteristics they share?
Nucleus contains genetic material, coded instructions for characteristics. Cytoplasm contains water and dissolved substances e.g sugar and salts. Cell surface membrane surrounds cytoplasm and controls entry and exit of dissolved substances.
8 of 11
What is the name for the place were chemical reactions take place in the cytoplasm?
organelles
9 of 11
an example of a chemical reaction in the organelles?
proteins are made in ribosomes and energy is released by respiration in mitochondria.
10 of 11
What is the effect of the absence and presence of the cellulose cell wall in plant and animal cells
presence in plant cells means they tend to be regular in shape. Absence in animal cells mean they are very irregular in shape.
