Biology B2: Respiration

?
What is respiration? (The scientific definition!)
Respiration is the process of RELEASING ENERGY FROM GLUCOSE which goes on in EVERY CELL
1 of 9
Do animals respire or do plants?
They BOTH respire. All living things do!
2 of 9
What is Aerobic Respiration, is it efficient and what is the word equation?
Aerobic respiration is respiration using OXYGEN. It is the efficient form of respiration. Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + ENERGY
3 of 9
What is Anaerobic Respiration, is it efficient and what is the word equation?
Anaerobic respiration is respiration without OXYGEN. It is the inefficient form of respiration as it does not release as much energy and products lactic acid. Glucose = ENERGY + lactic acid
4 of 9
Why is lactic acid bad?
Build up of lactic acid can be PAINFUL and can cause MUSCLE FATIGUE
5 of 9
What does anaerobic respiration lead to?
Oxygen debt!
6 of 9
What is oxygen debt?
When lactic acids has built up from anaerobic respiration, the body keeps do get rid of it, and oxygen is required to do so. When in oxygen debt, the brain trys to rectify the situation by increasing pluse and breathing rate
7 of 9
Why do we sometimes respire anaerobically?
When there is a lack of oxygen, anaerobic respiration starts.
8 of 9
What is energy released by aerobic respiration (the efficient one!) used for?
To build up larger molecules from smaller ones, to allow muscles to contact in animals, to keep body temperature steady and to build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients to into amino acid, which are then built into proteins!
