How long ago did Earth begin?
About 3 billion years ago.
1 of 13
What is the theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics?
Characteristics which develop during an organism's lifetime can be passed on to their offspring, but people found this hard to believe.
2 of 13
What was the theory of natural selection?
Small changes in organisms took place over a long period of time. All organisms in a species vary, so some are more likely to survive. Those that are best adapted breed and pass on their characteristics?
3 of 13
Why was Darwin's theory of evolution only gradually accepted?
The theory challenged the idea that God created plants and animals. Scientists did not think there was sufficient evidence.
4 of 13
Where did Darwin travel to observe natural selection?
The Galapagos Islands. He tried to show how finches would change over time they lived in different conditions. He could not explain, in terms of genes, why offspring inherited useful adaptations.
5 of 13
What is a mutation?
When a gene accidentally changes. If they mutated gene controls a characteristic which makes the organism better adapted to the environment, it will be passed on to the offspring
6 of 13
Why may mutations be important in natural selection if the environment changes?
They can cause immunity to certain diseases.
7 of 13
How can we classify organisms?
By comparing their similarities and differences.
8 of 13
What does classification do?
Help us understand evolutionary and ecological relationships.
9 of 13
What are the main kingdoms?
The plants kingdom, the animal kingdom, the kingdoms which contain the micro-organisms.
10 of 13
What is the smallest group in the classification system?
Species. Members of a species are very similar to each other and can breed to produce fertile offspring.
11 of 13
What are evolutionary trees?
Models which can be drawn to show the relationships between different groups of organisms.
12 of 13
What do ecological relationships tell us?
How species have evolved together in an environment.
