What is biomass?
The dry mass of living material in an organism.

What does a pyramid of biomass represent?
The mass of the organisms at each stage in a food chain.

Is a pyramid of biomass better than a pyramid of numbers?
It may be more accurate because it takes into consideration the mass. For example 1 organism could have a greater mass than lots of smaller organisms.

What energy do green plants transfer?
Solar (light) energy to chemical energy which is then passes through the food chain.

What is energy wastage?
When not all of the energy taken in by an organism results in the growth of that organism.

What happens to food which cannot be digested.
It is stored as energy in faeces and urine.

What happens to some of the biomass (food)?
It is used for respiration. It releases energy needed for living processes. Much of the energy released in respiration is eventually transferred to the surroundings.

What happens to the energy passed on in some animals?
It is used to keep a constant body temperature.

What do all organisms take up?
Nutrients. If they didn't eventually release them, the nutrients would run out.

What are detritus feeders?
Organisms which may start the process of decay by eating dead animals or plants and producing waste organisms.

What are decomposers?
Decay organisms which break down waste or dead animals and plants. Decay is faster if it is wet and warm. Many decomposers also need oxygen.

What happens to the materials from the waste and dead organisms?
They're recycled, returning nutrients to the soil.

How can humans recycle waste?
In sewage treatment plants and compost heaps.

What does the recycling of carbon dioxide involve?
Photosynthesis and respiration.

What processes remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis.

What processes return carbon dioxide to the atmosphere?
Respiration, combustion.

What are the most efficient methods of composting?
Allowing the waste to be mixed with oxygen and moisture. They also allow energy to escape by heating the surroundings. Worms might be added to speed the process.
