BIOLOGY 7:Controlling Body Temperature

HideShow resource information
What does the body have to balance to keep the core body temperature constant?
The amount of heat energy gained and lost
1 of 18
What detects the external temperature?
Temperature receptors in the skin
2 of 18
What do the temperature receptors in the hypothalamus detect?
The temperature of the blood
3 of 18
How does the nervous system help to control body temperature?
Using negative feedback
4 of 18
What does the hypothalamus act as?
A processing centre
5 of 18
What does the hypothalamus do when the temperature receptors detect that the core body temperature is too high or too low?
It receives information from the temperature receptors and triggers and effectors automatically
6 of 18
What are the 2 effectors used to warm up and cool down the body?
Muscles and glands
7 of 18
Do sweat glands warm up or cool down the body?
Cool down the body
8 of 18
Do muscles warm up or cool down the body?
Warm up the body
9 of 18
Do some effectors work antagonistically?
Yes
10 of 18
What is vasodilation?
The blood vessels close to the skin's surface get bigger in diameter (More blood gets to the skin's surface, the warm blood then loses more heat to its surroundings)
11 of 18
When does vasodilation happen?
When you're too hot
12 of 18
What is vasoconstriction?
The blood vessels close to the skin's surface get smaller in diameter (Less blood gets to the skin's surface and stops the blood losing as much heat to its surroundings)
13 of 18
When does vasoconstriction happen?
When you're too cold
14 of 18
When you're too hot what is produced to increase your core body temperature?
Sweat
15 of 18
What do you do when you're cold, which warms you up?
Shiver
16 of 18
What needs to happen to your muscles for you to shiver?
They need to contract rapidly
17 of 18
What increases the rate of respiration and warms the tissue surrounding the muscles?
Shivering
