Chemistry (Science A Unit 5)

?
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of different compounds (hydrocarbons)
1 of 24
What are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are chemical compounds made of hydrogen and carbon atoms only
2 of 24
What is fractional distillation?
The process of separating crude oil
3 of 24
How is concrete made?
By mixing cement, sand, aggretate and water
4 of 24
How is cement made?
By mixing limestone with clay and heating in a kiln
5 of 24
What is Carbon Monoxide?
A colourless, odourless, poisonous gas
6 of 24
What is the mass number?
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
7 of 24
What is the atomic number?
All atoms of an element, containing the same number of protons
8 of 24
What is a compound?
A compound is formed when two or more elements are combined together
9 of 24
Do protons have a positive or negative charge?
Positive charge (Proton- Positive)
10 of 24
Do neutrons have a positive, negative or no charge?
No charge because they are neutral and neutral means no charge (NEUTRons- NEUTRal)
11 of 24
Why are atoms neutral?
Because they have no charge
12 of 24
Why are elements put into groups on the periodic table?
They are put into groups corresponding to the amount of electrons they have
13 of 24
What happens when a metals react with a non- metal?
Ions are formed
14 of 24
What do compounds of metals bonded with non-metals have?
Ionic bonds
15 of 24
What happens to the atoms of a non- metal when combined?
They share electrons to form covalent bonds
16 of 24
REMEMBER:
The mass of PRODUCTS is equal to the mass of REACTANTS
17 of 24
What is the process of BREAKING DOWN by HEATING?
Thermal composition.
18 of 24
What does the process of thermal decomposition do?
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO2) is broken down by heating to make Calcium Oxide (CaO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
19 of 24
What are uses of Limestone?
For building material, to make carbon oxide and cement
20 of 24
What is the main use of Limewater?
It's used to test Carbon Dioxide. The limestone turns cloudy when reacted with it, the solution produced is Carbon Carbonate
21 of 24
What is Calcium Hydroxide?
Calcium Hydroxide is an alkali made from Calcium Oxide and water. Its used to neutralise acids and can be reacted with CO2 to produce Calcium Carbonate
22 of 24
What is an ore?
Rock from which metal can be extracted
23 of 24
Why are steels alloys of iron?
Because they are mixtures of iron with carbon and other elements
