BIOLOGY 4: Photosynthesis

?
What is photosynthesis?
A series of chemical reactions that uses energy from sunlight to produce food
1 of 14
What does photosynthesis produce?
Glucose
2 of 14
Where does photosynthesis happen?
In the cells, in green parts of plants and some microoganisms
3 of 14
What is needed for photosynthesis to happen?
Chlorophyll
4 of 14
What is chlorophyll?
A green substance which absorbs sunlight and allows the energy to be used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose
5 of 14
What is produced as a waste product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
6 of 14
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen
7 of 14
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6 H12 06 + 6O2
8 of 14
What type of organisms form the start of food chains?
Organisms that photosynthesise
9 of 14
How many main ways are there for plants to use glucose?
3
10 of 14
What are the three main ways for plants to use glucose?
Respiration, to make chemicals for growth, and to store as starch
11 of 14
How is glucose used for respiration?
It releases energy from the glucose
12 of 14
How is glucose used to make chemicals for growth?
1) Glucose is converted into cellulose for making cell walls 2) Glucose is combined with nitrogen to make amino acids, then proteins 3) To help make chlorophyll
13 of 14
How is glucose used to store starch?
Glucose is turned into starch and stored in roots, stems and leaves. It's used at times when the rate of photosynthesis is slower, e.g. winter
