How are humans reducing the amount of land avaliable for animals and plants?
By building, quarrying, farming and dumping waste.
1 of 18
What are humans polluting and how?
Waterways with sewage and toxic chemicals, air with smoke and gases and land with toxic chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides.
2 of 18
Why does landfill cause pollution?
Toxic chemicals leak out into the surrounding soil and underground.
3 of 18
How is acid rain produced?
Sulfur dioxide is produced from burning fuels, the sulfur dioxide then dissolves in water in the air forming acidic solutions which fall as acid rain.
4 of 18
What problems to nature does acid rain cause?
Kills organisms, damages trees if they are soaked in it for a long time and changes the pH of the soil which damages roots.
5 of 18
What are the effects of deforestation?
Increased the release of carbon dioxide by burning trees, reduced the rate at which carbon dioxide is removed by photosynthesis and reduced biodiversity due to the loss of food and habitats.
6 of 18
Why has deforestation occured?
So crops can be grown to produce bio fuels and so there is more cattle for food.
7 of 18
How has the destruction of peat bogs increased the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere?
Peat is removed from the bogs and used in compost for gardens which is then decayed by microorganisms.
8 of 18
How is carbon dioxide sequestered?
Carbon dioxide is removed from the air by plants in photosynthesis and is dissolved in oceans, rivers and lakes.
9 of 18
What affect will an increase in the earths temperature have?
Cause changes in the earths climate, cause a rise in sea levels due to melting ice caps, reduce biodiversity, cause changes in migration patterns and result in changes in the distribution of species.
10 of 18
How are ethanol based fuels produced?
Crushed sugar cane in placed in fermentation tanks. Bacteria in the tanks acts on the sugar cane and in time produces a crude form of ethanol. This is then passed on to be distilled where it is refined to a pure form.
11 of 18
Why is ethanol described as carbon neutral?
Because only the carbon used for photosynthesis by the crops is returned to the atmosphere when the ethanol is burned.
12 of 18
How is biogas produced?
Dung and waste products are put into the biogas generator which provides ideal conditions for bacteria to produce and ferment carbohydrates. Methane is released out which is used as a fuel for heating and cooking.
13 of 18
How is meat produced more efficiently?
By preventing animals from moving so they dont waste energy, keeping the animal in warm conditions so they don't waste energy by maintaining their body temperature and by reducing the food chain so less energy is wasted within it.
14 of 18
What is sustainable food production?
Managing resources and finding new types of food such as mycoprotein to ensure there is enough food for the current and future populations.
15 of 18
How are fish stocks in the oceans monitored?
Fishermen can only remove a certain amount of fish per year and they must use a certain size net to avoid catching small fish that are very young.
16 of 18
How is mycoprotein produced?
By growing the fungus fusarium aerobically on cheap sugar syrup and harvesting the mycoprotein from it.
17 of 18
What human activities affect the global environment?
deforestation which increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, growing rice and rearing cattle resulting in more methane being produced and building dams which cause a loss of habitats and reduce the amount of fertile land available.
